Josh Fox Says: Help DCS Fight for You

A Letter From Josh Fox, Director of Gasland

From Josh Fox’s letter:
I dedicated my Academy Award nominated film, GasLand, to DCS because they sounded the alarm about fracking back in 2008. And they were there with invaluable advice and information that allowed me to create a movie that changed how Americans see fracking. DCS helped make that happen.

Fast Forward to 2020 – The pandemic, the elections, social unrest and, for many, some very sad realizations have directed focus away from environmental concerns. DCS did not waiver, continuing to challenge the behemoth fracking industry with science, legal actions and community interventions.

I am asking that you support DCS now, so that they may build on the successful work of this past year.”

Our Work Continues in 2021:

DCS Continues to Fight for a Full Fracking Ban in the Delaware River Basin

The Delaware River Basin Commission’s (DRBC) proposed ban on fracking in the Delaware River Basin is still pending, while various legal and legislative threats are playing out on the front burners. We continue pushing the commissioners (the governors) to vote on a total ban by mobilizing localities to pass resolutions, and we actively encourage businesses as well as individuals to speak up about the proposed ban. The ban, in addition to blocking drilling, must include zero import and disposal of wastes in the Basin, and no removal of water for fracking activities elsewhere.

NY State Legislation Classifies Frack Waste as Hazardous

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation this past August reclassifying fracking related waste as hazardous. It was DCS that began the push for this important step toward a total ban back in 2010. NYC banned frack waste disposal in NYC sewage plants in 2016, out of this same effort.

But let’s not forget that New York State continues to allow frack waste transport and disposal. With your help, DCS will continue to fight this dangerous practice.

PA Attorney General Sets Up Fracking Hot Line

Our educator/advocate program, working one-on-one, has helped households with fracking related health impacts navigate past hostile local officials to the AG’s office.

At our urging, a hotline was established that allows people to get their complaints directly to that office – especially important in the Covid-19 era, as the households we network, overwhelmed by threats to economic survival posed by the pandemic, are increasingly fearful of antagonizing the local officials and businesses whom they need to stay economically afloat. Unfortunately, that hotline has not been well publicized, but, with your support, DCS will soon be advertising the hotline in “weekly shoppers” serving areas we know to be especially badly affected.

DCS Opposes Proposed LNG Export Terminal in the Delaware River Basin

DCS is joining communities, organizations, local government and private citizens in opposing New Fortress Delaware Partner’s Liquified Natural Gas export terminal in Gibbstown, NJ – which would vastly increase demand for Marcellus gas and its local and global impacts.

We’ve successfully filed objections to DRBC’s voting on and granting permission to triple the project’s size. We have filed for “interested party” status, allowing us to continue to present information on health impacts; most others focus solely on environmental impacts. We can’t continue to provide this important perspective without your continued support.

Environmental fights and wins are slow and difficult, but we are persistent. Only if we keep the pressure on do we have a chance to prevail. We will not let up. We can not let up.
